Naomi a poursuivi.

Un invité inspira brusquement.

Le visage de Vivian devint presque blanc.

Eleanor regarda ses boucles d’oreilles.

« Elle portait aussi ces émeraudes. »

Vivian toucha instinctivement une oreille.

Charles ferma les yeux.

Margaret murmura : « Oh, mon Dieu. »

Vivian recula vers la porte.

« C’est un piège. »

Eleanor secoua la tête.

“Non.”

« Tu me détestes depuis le début. »

Grant se rassit.

Il regarda Eleanor.

« Combien a-t-elle pris ? »

Evan a répondu.

« Cent quatre-vingt-quatre mille dollars provenant des transactions litigieuses. »

Margaret se tourna vers Vivian.

« Quelle annonce ? »

Personne n’a répondu.

Eleanor rouvrit le dossier bleu.

« Je peux vous aider. »

Eleanor le regarda droit dans les yeux.

«Transitionné.»

Grant tressaillit.

Vivian a rétorqué sèchement : « Tu as accepté. »

« J’ai accepté de discuter des options. »

« Vous avez signé les documents. »

Le silence retomba dans la pièce.

Grant se tourna vers elle.

« Quels papiers ? »

Grant stared at the heading.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY FINANCIAL GUARDIANSHIP.

His face went gray.

“I never signed that.”

Vivian looked at him.

“Yes, you did.”

Grant grabbed the paper.

“No.”

He scanned the signature.

“I signed a medical release.”

Naomi nodded.

“The signature page appears to have been attached afterward.”

Grant looked at Vivian with naked horror.

“You switched the pages?”

Vivian’s voice became thin.

“You would never have signed otherwise.”

Grant stepped away from her.

“What were you trying to do?”

Eleanor answered before Vivian could.

“Have me declared financially incompetent.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Eleanor continued.

“Then Grant would control my assets.”

Charles looked at Vivian.

“And the house.”

Naomi nodded.

“The house could then potentially be sold with court approval.”

Vivian shook her head violently.

“She forgets things.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“You mean the things I began pretending to forget?”

Vivian went completely still.

Grant stared at his mother.

“You were pretending?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Some of them.”

Margaret lowered her hand.

“Why?”

“To discover why Vivian kept asking whether I remembered account passwords, property documents, and the location of my will.”

Vivian’s eyes flashed.

“You trapped me.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I stopped protecting you from your own choices.”

Naomi produced a small digital recorder.

Vivian stared at it.

Eleanor continued.

“The first time you suggested assisted living, I thought you were insensitive.”

She looked at Grant.

“The fourth time, I became suspicious.”

Grant looked ashamed.

Eleanor returned her attention to Vivian.

“Then you began telling people I wandered outside at night.”

“You did.”

“I walked in my garden.”

“You left the house after midnight.”

“I have owned that garden for thirty-one years.”

Several guests exchanged glances.

Vivian pointed at Eleanor.

“She left the stove on.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Once.”

Vivian looked triumphant.

Eleanor continued.

“Eight years ago.”

The triumph vanished.

“You misplaced medication.”

“I moved vitamins into a different drawer.”

“You forgot Margaret’s birthday.”

Margaret frowned.

“No, she called me before Vivian did.”

Charles almost smiled despite himself.

Vivian spun toward her mother.

“That is not the point.”

Margaret stepped backward.

“I am beginning to think it is.”

Vivian’s eyes filled again.

“You are all turning against me because of her.”

Eleanor looked almost sorrowful.

“Nobody had to turn against you.”

She gestured toward the documents.

“You kept walking in one direction until everyone finally noticed where you were going.”

Vivian stared at the blue folder.

Her breathing became shallow.

Grant looked toward Naomi.

“Was the guardianship petition filed?”

Naomi nodded.

“Yesterday morning.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“Can it be stopped?”

“It already has been challenged.”

Grant opened his eyes.

“How?”

Naomi almost smiled.

“Your mother completed an independent cognitive examination two weeks ago.”

Eleanor picked up her wineglass.

“The neurologist found me irritatingly competent.”

A few guests laughed despite the tension.

Even Charles allowed a brief smile.

Vivian did not.

Naomi continued.

“Oui.”

“Comment?”
