Elle regarda en direction des véhicules.

« Puis-je réparer quelque chose ? »

« Mon supérieur hiérarchique me veut à Washington demain. »

J’ai eu un nœud à l’estomac.

“Pourquoi?”

La nuit parut soudain plus froide.

« Avez-vous approuvé quoi que ce soit ? »

“Non.”

« Signer quelque chose ? »

“Non.”

« Recommander Hamilton ? »

“Jamais.”

I looked toward my father’s vehicle.

Nathan followed my gaze.

“Evelyn.”

“Yes?”

“Your father did not only build a defense around your name.”

I already understood.

“He built one around yours.”

Nathan nodded.

And inside the house, Caroline screamed.

We ran toward her.

She stood beside an open evidence box, pointing at a photograph an agent had removed from Dad’s office.

The photograph showed Nathan at a veterans’ charity gala two years earlier.

Dad stood behind him.

Beside Dad was the founder of Hamilton Strategic.

Caroline looked at Nathan.

“You told me you met Dad after we started dating.”

“I did.”

She shook her head violently.

“No.”

She pointed at the photograph.

“You met him six months before you met me.”

Nathan stared at the picture.

Then he looked at me.

“I do not remember this.”

Caroline whispered, “Dad introduced us.”

Nathan’s face tightened.

“What?”

“At the marina fundraiser.”

She turned pale.

“He told me exactly which table to visit.”

Nathan looked toward the driveway where my father was being placed inside a federal vehicle.

The realization hit all three of us together.

Caroline had not accidentally become engaged to a Navy SEAL commander.

My father had maneuvered her toward one.

Nathan had not accidentally appeared beside Hamilton’s founder.

Someone had been building a network.

And Dad had spent years pretending my career was worthless while quietly surrounding himself with people whose Navy access had value.

Caroline sank into a chair.

“My engagement was part of this.”

Nathan crouched several feet away.

“We do not know that yet.”

She looked at him.

“Dad picked you.”

Nathan said nothing.

She laughed once, brokenly.

“I thought I finally did something he respected.”

I felt anger move through me again.

Not at Caroline this time.

At the man outside.

At the father who had turned both daughters into tools while convincing us we were competitors.

An agent hurried toward Mercer.

“Sir, forensic preview on the external drive returned a directory structure.”

Mercer entered quickly.

“What kind?”

The agent glanced at me.

“We found folders named for Admiral Hart, Commander Reed, Caroline Hart, and eleven other military personnel.”

Nathan stood.

Caroline stopped crying.

I asked the only question that mattered.

“What is inside them?”

The agent’s expression made my stomach drop.

“Profiles.”

Mercer frowned.

“Explain.”

“Travel schedules, family relationships, financial pressure points, photographs, and potential access pathways.”

Nathan’s jaw clenched.

Caroline whispered, “Pressure points?”

The agent nodded reluctantly.

“There is another folder titled Leverage.”

My mother made a broken sound from the hallway.

I stared toward the darkness beyond the front windows.

My father had not merely hidden documents.

He had cataloged people.

He had cataloged me.

Agent Mercer looked directly at me.

“Admiral, there is a file specifically about you.”

I felt no surprise anymore.

“What does it say?”

“We have not opened it fully.”

“Then do not tell me until counsel clears it.”

Mercer nodded.

Nathan looked at me.

“That was quick.”

Maman s’agrippa au mur.

Caroline hocha la tête, hébétée.

Puis Mercer m’a regardé.

Ma respiration s’est ralentie.

« Lieux ? »

« Norfolk, Washington, San Diego, Pearl Harbor et cette résidence. »

Nathan jura à voix basse.

Mercer a poursuivi.

Caroline se couvrit la bouche.

Maman a chuchoté : « Richard. »

Mercer a poursuivi.

« Un document s’intitule “Contingence”. »

Nathan plissa les yeux.

« Quel genre de plan de secours ? »
