« Vous avez laissé votre écriture. »
“Attendez.”
Sa voix baissa.
« Ma clé ? »
“Oui.”
Il regarda Sabrina.
« Tu m’as dit que tu l’avais perdu. »
“No, you did not.”
The voice came from behind her.
One of the bridesmaids had stood.
Her name was Rachel.
I knew almost nothing about her beyond seeing her at two bridal events.
Rachel’s face was gray.
“Sabrina had Michael’s key last night.”
Sabrina spun toward her.
“Sit down.”
Rachel did not move.
“You showed it to us after the rehearsal dinner.”
“Rachel.”
“You said you had a surprise planned for Beatrice.”
The guests began whispering again.
Sabrina’s jaw tightened.
“You were drunk.”
“I had one glass of wine.”
Rachel’s hands were trembling.
“You said Beatrice needed to learn who was in charge.”
Michael looked physically ill.
I almost pitied him.
Then I remembered every time he had laughed when Sabrina humiliated me.
Almost was not enough.
Sabrina pointed toward Rachel.
“She is jealous because I removed her from the maid-of-honor position.”
Rachel gave a broken laugh.
“You removed me because I told you shaving a sleeping woman was assault.”
The room erupted.
Sabrina lunged around the table.
Graham grabbed her arm.
“Enough.”
His voice carried authority.
For one hopeful second, I thought Sabrina’s father might finally show shame.
Then he looked at me.
“Beatrice, this is a wedding.”
His tone became patronizing.
“Whatever foolish prank occurred should not destroy two young people’s future.”
I stared at him.
“A foolish prank?”
Graham spread his hands.
“Nobody was seriously hurt.”
Lucia stood.
“Her scalp was bleeding.”
Heads turned.
Lucia’s voice trembled with fury.
“She had razor burns across the back of her head.”
Celeste finally spoke.
“Please stop making this uglier than necessary.”
I almost smiled.
“That request would have been useful several hours ago.”
Michael walked toward me.
“Mom, I swear I did not know she was going to shave your head.”
I believed that part.
Unfortunately for Michael, the truth was larger.
“Did you give her access to my room?”
He looked at Sabrina.
Then he looked at me.
His silence answered first.
“Michael.”
He swallowed.
“She said she wanted to play a harmless wedding prank.”
My chest tightened.
“What did you think she planned?”
“I don’t know.”
“That is not an answer.”
His face flushed.
“She joked about messing with your hair.”
The words landed differently than Sabrina’s razor ever could.
I gripped the podium.
“You knew she intended to do something to me while I slept.”
“No.”
“I just heard you admit it.”
“I thought she would put temporary dye in it.”
Several guests groaned.
Michael glanced around angrily.
“I didn’t think she would shave it.”
“And that makes you innocent?”
“I never said that.”
“No, Michael.”
My voice became softer.
“You have spent years saying nothing.”
His anger disappeared.
I continued before fear could return.
“You said nothing when she mocked me.”
“You said nothing when she called my clothes embarrassing.”
“You said nothing when she told friends I looked like your grandmother.”
Sabrina crossed her arms.
“Oh, come on.”
I turned toward her.
“Thank you.”
She blinked.
“For reminding everyone exactly who you are.”
Her expression hardened.
“You have never accepted me.”
Michael l’a immédiatement reconnu.
Son regard restait fixé dessus.
«Ce document contenait l’autorisation de transfert.»
L’attention de Sabrina s’aiguisa.
« Le penthouse a été acheté en espèces. »
Michael a murmuré mon nom.
Son expression s’est assombrie.
«Nous avons déjà signé des contrats.»
J’ai eu un nœud à l’estomac.
« Quels contrats ? »
Sabrina a répondu trop vite.
« Rien d’important. »
Michael la regarda.
« Sabrina. »
